The Days of Reflection
Day 15 – It’s a team effort
It has long been said that it takes a village to raise a child. With children spending a large portion of their week at school, it could be said that teachers provide an important role in raising those children.
Rather than focussing on the children, this post is aimed at the village. Namely my fellow teachers. I am focussing on them as today I had a terrible lesson where a student was removed from my class for making an inappropriate comment… then 2 lessons later I was observed with another class who excelled at the tasks set and I had a productive and enjoyable lesson.
My colleagues were great today. I was able to share my frustrations about the less than positive lesson; gain perspective, and figure out a way forward, because I was surrounded by a strong team in my faculty. Later on, they were able to observe me teach and enjoy doing so. One colleague said that the lesson demonstrated “the reason why we teach” as the students remained engaged and enthusiastic for 50 minutes of practical activity. This was such a compliment and boost to me considering the less than positive start to my day.
I’m not ashamed to say one lesson didn’t go to plan. This happens from time to time. Provided support processes and behaviour management systems are in place, the necessary structure is provided for students to learn from their mistakes and develop into well rounded individuals. This can only happen with a strong and decisive team of teachers in the school…The village.
Lesson observations can be stressful but today it was a pleasurable experience. Regardless of the outcome , I knew o would get constructive feedback to improve my teaching and learning.
Today I give thanks to my wonderful team. What are you thankful for toady?
Thank you for reading.
